Twitter, you'll know that each Monday, I offer my quick analysis of each preceding week's box office on Broadway. This week's analysis was delayed a day because of the Columbus Day Holiday.

Broadway box office gross up sharply last week over week prior to $19,984,869 13.54% increase=more than $2.6 million
12:36 pm October 12 -
Broadway capacity increased 2.26% to 81.85% meaning 240,009 tickets out of 292,580 possible sold.
12:37 pm October 12 - Broadway's average ticket price jumped from $72.70 to $78.71 last week
12:38 pm October 12 - AMERICAN IDIOT didn't sustain Armstrong momentum: week's top decline from $1,092,334 to $567,731. 37.8% capacity drop
12:39 pm October 12 - #1 Broadway show? WICKED grossing $1,602,698. Average ticket price of $111.81 on 99% capacity
12:40 pm October 12 - #2 Broadway show is LION KING, grossing 1,544,241 with average ticket price of $117.47 and 98% capacity
12:41 pm October 12 - #3 Broadway show JERSEY BOYS also has highest capacity (99.5%) & top average ticket price ($119.41).Grosses $1,166,65
12:42 pm October 12 - WICKED, LION KING, JERSEY BOYS, BILLY ELLIOT, PROMISES PROMISES, ADDAMS FAMILY, MEMPHIS all gross $1 million+
12:43 pm October 12 - MEMPHIS breaks $1 million mark for 1st time! Grosses $1,002,902 on 89.6% capacity. Average ticket price: $95.20

12:50 pm October 12 - The aforementioned AMERICAN IDIOT had last week's lowest capacity: 55.6%. Grosses $567,731 w/av tix priced $74.65
12:51 pm October 12 - BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON had last week's lowest average ticket price $42.14. $290,378 gross on 83.6% capacity
12:52 pm October 12 - Only Broadway shows under 70% capacity last week: IN THE HEIGHTS, BRIEF ENCOUNTER, SCOTTSBORO BOYS, AMERICAN IDIOT
12:53 pm October 12 - FELA! (with Patti LaBelle) posts week's largest increase in capacity: 17.8% to 85.3%. Grosses $548,728.
12:54 pm October 12 - AMERICAN IDIOT had week's steepest decline in capacity on Broadway. Down 37.8% to 55.6%. Can they bring back Billie Joe?

4:00 pm September 13 - REALLY slow week on Broadway as grosses fall 19.3% from previous week to just $13,382,274
4:00 pm September 13 - Broadway capacity fell 8.97% last week to just 71.10% or 163,121 seats sold out of possible 229,387
4:01 pm September 13 - Broadway's average ticket price fell from $84.32 to just $77.54 last week
4:02 pm September 13 - Last week, WICKED and THE LION KING were only Broadway shows to earn more than $1 million each
4:03 pm September 13 - Normally sold-out WICKED remains top-grossing Broadway show at $1,400,569 & 95% capacity. Average ticket price: $101.92
4:04 pm September 13 - With school in session, LION KING distant 2nd grossing $1,228,315 on 83.4% capacity. Still top av. tix priced $109.78
4:05 pm September 13 - WICKED had week's highest capacity of 95%. Once mighty WEST SIDE STORY had lowest capacity of 50.5% (gross: $487,878)
4:06 pm September 13 - Week's lowest gross/average ticket price for 8 performances: MRS. WARREN'S PROFESSION $179,981/$43.19. 80.4% capacity
4:07 pm September 13 - BRIEF ENCOUNTER's 5 previews grossed $123,695. Average ticket price: $38.96. New entrant ran on 63.2% capacity
4:08 pm September 13 - Broadway's THE ADDAMS FAMILY lost most capacity week over week of 20.7% to 65.5%, grossing $806,698
4:09 pm September 13 - AMERICAN IDIOT, MAMMA MIA! and MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET only Broadway shows to increase capacity week over week
4:11 pm September 13 - MAMMA MIA! picked up most capacity week over week of 7.6% to 85.5% but grosses still fell by $43K to $775,403
4:13 pm September 13 - Broadway had such a down week that 11 shows grossed less than $500,000 each
4:14 pm September 13 - Silver lining? Only 3 Broadway shows attracted less than 60% capacity: MARY POPPINS, WEST SIDE STORY & MILLION $ QUARTET
4:15 pm September 13 - Finally rumors be damned: NEXT TO NORMAL keep chugging along grossing $236,417 on 65.5% capacity. Av tix priced $57.56

8:20 pm August 23 - Broadway box office slipped 3.49% last week to $18,148,278, down from $18,781,652
8:21 pm August 23 - Broadway capacity fell 1.02% last week to 81.51% or 204,265 tickets sold out of 249,535 possible seats
8:22 pm August 23 - Broadway's average ticket price last week was $85.70 down slightly from $85.89 week before
8:23 pm August 23 - WICKED, LION KING, ADDAMS FAMILY, MARY POPPINS, BILLY ELLIOT, JERSEY BOYS each gross $1 million + last week
8:24 pm August 23 - PROMISES PROMISES falls out of million dollar club last week grossing $966,150 on 78% capacity. Av tix priced $88.63
8:25 pm August 23 - With LION KING nipping at it heels, sold-out WICKED top grossing show again with $1,688,034. Av tix priced $116.64
3:55 pm August 23 - LION KING had Broadway's top capacity last week with 100.1% & week's highest av tix price $121.61, grossing $1,632,627
8:27 pm August 23 - Just closed RACE was last week's lowest grossing show $274,787 and week's lowest capacity 49%. Av tix priced $66.23
8:28 pm August 23 - NEXT TO NORMAL had week's lowest average ticket price on Broadway of $60.81. Grossed $298,132 on 79.4% capacity
8:29 pm August 23 - Soon-to-close COME FLY AWAY had Broadway's top capacity increase last week of 9.7% to 70.2% grossing $635,399
8:30 pm August 23 - PROMISES PROMISES had Broadway's biggest capacity drop last week of 10.3% to 88.3%
8:31 pm August 23 - Just closed SOUTH PACIFIC went out on a Bali Ha'i with 100% capacity, grossing $626,513 with av tix priced $86.01

4:47 pm June 6 - JERSEY BOYS has fallen below $1 million gross for first time in years grossing just $963,853 playing to 88.6% capacity
4:48 pm June 6 - ADDAMS FAMILY was also among shows grossing more than $1 million last week, too: $1,278,089 with 94.4% capacity
4:49 pm June 6 - Sold-out WICKED continues reign as Broadway box office's highest grossing show: $1,570,925 with av tix priced $108.55
4:50 pm June 6 - FENCES trifecta: week's top grossing play $1,024,317, highest average ticket price: $116.72, highest capacity: 101.7%
4:51 pm June 6 - NEXT FALL week's lowest grossing show ($116,150) & average ticket price ($47.12). Played to just 52.3% capacity.
4:52 pm June 6 - Week's lowest capacity was at HAIR, attracting 46.5%. Grosses $351,992 with average ticket price of $67.01
4:54 pm June 6 - In a down box office week overall, BEHANDING IN SPOKANE increased capacity by 3.6% to 72.9%. Grosses $483,113
4:56 pm June 6 - Biggest decline in capacity was AMERICAN IDIOT, losing 21.9% audience to 52.8%. Grosses down sharply to $612,380
5:00 pm June 6 - Last week, only FENCES and WICKED sold out completely. LION KING came close at 98.8% capacity
5:02 pm June 6 - AMERICAN IDIOT, FELA!, MEMPHIS, MILLION $ QUARTET (all Tony Best Musical nominees) lost 10% or more of their audiences

Hairspray's Closing: Run And Tell That!It may be
anti-climactic, but it
is official!
The Tony Award-winning Best Musical of 2003 --
Hairspray -- will close on January 4, 2009. But it won't be before the show's original Edna Turnblad enjoys one final victory romp across the boards of the
Neil Simon Theatre.
To date, the tuner has grossed over $265 million on Broadway alone. That's about
40 times the U.S. gross of the original
John Waters film from 1988 and
more than double the U.S. gross of
last year's movie musical.
Fortunately, the show won't close before welcoming back
Harvey Fierstein, who will reprise his Tony-winning turn as Edna one more time.
And you know what? I've already purchased my tickets to do my part to send the show off in style. Here's my little secret -- I have not seen Fierstein perform in the show since taking in the Seattle tryouts back in the summer of 2002, so my upcoming visit will mark my first time ever in the Neil Simon Theatre.
I'd say it's about time, wouldn't you?

I can't actually say the word. We may already be in one, but you see I don't want to be accused by anyone of a self-fulfulling prophesy -- and you'll see that during the last r........
before 9/11, the impact meant:
...the number of new productions on the boards dropped to 30 (vs. 39 the season prior)
and
...ticket sales, which in 1989-90 tallied slightly more than 8 million, but then sank to about 7.3 million for the next two seasons.
and
...the 1989-90 cume of $282 million dwindling to $267 million the following season before climbing back up to $293 million in 1991-92.
Let's just hope that if we get in one, we get out quickly.
