Curtains To Rise At Al Hirschfeld Theatre In March

Curtains To Rise At Al Hirschfeld Theatre In March

It's official! The excellent and uproarious new musical comedy cum murder mystery Curtains is coming to the Great White Way. The Scott Ellis-helmed tuner by John Kander and Fred Ebb (with additional material by Rupert Holmes) is slated to open at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre, current home to The Wedding Singer, on March 22 after beginning previews on February 27. The Al Hirschfeld has long been considered the theatre of choice for Curtains.

As regular Steve On Broadway readers will recall, I loved this musical when I saw it during its world premiere run in Los Angeles. I'm thrilled that so many of the exceptional original stars will be part of the Broadway cast. They include: David Hyde Pierce and Debra Monk, along with Jason Daniely, Edward Hibbert, Jill Paice, Noah Racey, Megan Sikora and Karen Ziemba.

Now that Curtains has found its home on the Great White Way, I fully expect this show to be a powerful Tony contender alongside Grey Gardens and Mary Poppins in what is shaping up to be one of the strongest years for new musicals in the last couple decades -- my prediction is that each of these shows will receive multiple nominations, as will Spring Awakening.

This is Steve On Broadway (SOB).

This is so exciting and the Whingers have been dithering terribly about it. It's almost enough to draw us over Atlantic and we're overdue a visit to Broadway. Look forward to reading your review, Steve.

Andrew, I loved this show as you'll see from my earlier review of the Broadway tryout at:
