"Sunday" In Studio 54 With Roundabout

"Sunday" In Studio 54 With Roundabout

Fresh from its five Olivier Award wins last weekend, the Sunday In The Park With George revival is now confirmed for an early 2008 transfer to Studio 54. The Menier Chocolate Factory received spectacular critical acclaim for its production, which will now be mounted by Broadway's Roundabout Theatre Company beginning January 18, 2008. Opening night is set for February 14.

Casting is yet to be announced, although as I stated on Monday, one would hope that every consideration be given to allowing Olivier Award-winning actors Daniel Evans and Jenna Russell to reprise their West End performances on this side of the pond.

While a special concert version of Sunday In The Park With George was staged on Broadway in 1994, this marks the first time that a fully-produced revival of the musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine will appear on the Great White Way. The original Broadway production enjoyed 604 regular performances from May 2, 1984 through October 13, 1985. Although it famously lost the Best Musical Tony to La Cage Aux Folles, it did earn a Pulitzer Prize for Best Drama in 1985.

This will clearly be an eagerly anticipated musical for anyone serious about Broadway theatre. I'll keep you posted on the casting choices.

I was so disappointed not to get to London to see it, so you can bet my enthusiasm can hardly be contained.

Yes, fantastic at the Menier. Great production, but the thing which lifted it into being something truly special was the design - quite amazing. Never saw it after it transferred to the bigger venue, but I'm told the computer graphics worked even better on a larger stage. Go!

Andrew - Fortunately, Studio 54's space is limited, so it's perfect for smaller productions. Appreciate your mentioning the design element, about which I've heard wondrous things! Can't wait to see it for myself.

I love this musical and hope to get a chance to see it when it transfers! Although Studio 54 is not one of my favorite broadway venues.

Erica, I agree that the seating in Studio 54 leaves something to be desired. After all, not too long ago, Sunday in Studio 54 used to mean a LONG night of debauchery. It's conversion back to a legit theatre hasn't been flawless, but I have enjoyed some great shows there like Cabaret and Assassins. I think this venue works best for smaller shows.
