Tony Awards: Win Place Show

Tony Awards: Win Place Show

The American Theatre Wing’s 62nd annual Tony Awards are now history, and in case you didn't notice, last evening was a huge night for winning shows focused on places. You know, places like Washington Heights in the upper reaches of Manhattan, Osage County, Oklahoma and the South Pacific. Those three distinct locales provided the basis for the year's Best Musical, Best Play and Best Revival of a Musical, respectively.

And if you happened to notice that the envelope for Best Revival of a Play had flown the coop during the Tony broadcast (it had already been awarded among the technical awards handed out during the hour before the CBS telecast), it's a little apropos that the winning show's title is based on a preferred means of getting to all those destinations named in paragraph one by air.

Here are all the nominees and winners (* denotes whom I said "will win"; ** denotes those I said "should win"; *** denotes those who at some point last evening connected with yours truly; while **** denotes those who allowed me to hold their Tony):

I'll provide more commentary later, but despite not predicting a couple major categories correctly, I'm pleased that I won the Tony pool I was in. How about you?

This is Steve On Broadway (SOB).

Congrats on winning the pool! I didn't have one going but was so damned happy to see Laura Benanti, Boyd Gaines and Patti Lupone honoured. Patti's speech was a blast and Boyd and Laura seemed so genuine.

Now I'm wishing more than ever too that I'd seen more shows when I was in NY. I'm dancing as fast as I can!

Rondi let you hold her Tony!!!! She is the best! Ok, you've already held an Oscar this year, so now all you need is the Grammy and the Emmy. You're halfway there! Plus, you met Stew AND Lin-Manuel Miranda AND Paulo Szot!!!! I can't wait for the details! Did you ever imagine when you went to see "Annie" in London all those years ago that you'd end up writing about the theatre and seeing every Broadway show and going to the Tonys?! You're floating so high right now you're never coming down, right? ;-)

Dale, I joked to Mic Pool (who won for The 39 Steps) how thanks to my last minute switch to him for my official pool, I won. I quipped that thanks to him, I won the Tony MicPool. Great guy, by the way.

Esther, Yes, Rondi Reed - as gracious as ever - let me hold her Tony. Of all the award winners, hers made me the happiest.
