Tony Time 2008
Tony Time 2008This evening marks the American Theatre Wing's 62nd Annual Tony Awards hosted by Whoopi Goldberg. The Tonys represent is the highest honors bestowed annually upon Broadway plays and musicals.
Started in 1947, the Tonys were named for Antoinette Perry, who was a theatrical powerhouse in her day both on and off the stage. Those first Tony Awards were held at the Waldorf Astoria's Grand Ballroom with 11 awards presented in only 7 categories, along with 8 special awards.
Contrast that with this year's Tonys, which will be held just one long block away from the Great White Way at the storied Radio City Music Hall, where awards will be announced in a record 26 categories -- Best Sound Design (for both Plays and Musicals) has finally been added this year -- in addition to special awards that will honor the legendary Stephen Sondheim (Lifetime Achievement in Theatre), Chicago Shakespeare Theatre (Regional Theatre Tony Award) and the late renowned orchestrator Robert Russell Bennett (Special Tony Award).
Since there's more than just a little bit of Broadway in me, yours truly is thrilled that for my first time, I'll also be getting in on the act. I'll be taking in the Tonys live from my own special orchestra seat at Radio City. But my fun doesn't stop there. I'll also be attending this morning's dress rehearsal, as well as tonight's Tony Gala, along with the official party for one of this year's hottest shows. Perhaps you can guess.
Thus, it won't be until tomorrow that I post all of this year's winners, but I'll have plenty of commentary and hopefully some great pictures to share.
In the meantime, whether you're in Radio City Music Hall or watching on CBS beginning at 8 p.m. EDT tonight, look for my eyes in the crowd.
This is Steve On Broadway (SOB).

What a perfect ending to your first season of seeing every new Broadway show. I'm so happy for you Steve! I want to hear about everything - from the dress rehearsal to the party. You can bet that every time the camera turns to the audience, I'll be looking for those eyes. And thank-you for opening my eyes to some incredible theatre this year.
WAAAAAAA HAAAAATTTT????
Jeal- OUS!
Dress rehearsal!????
I can't wait for SOB's Tony Award redux! Me? I'm enjoying them from the comfort of my living room (although I'd rather be dressing up, seeing all those performances live and rubbing elbows with you and Broadway's finest). :)
I'm sure you had an awesome time. I think I saw you on tv. :-)
Esther, Yes, it is the ultimate recap for a year of perfect attendance by yours truly. It was an evening I'll never forget.
Vance, Yes, the dress rehearsal, too. It was my chance to meet such fine folks as Julie White and Laura Linney. Both were incredibly gracious.
Alicia, Hopefully by now you've had a chance to see my Tony recap. I've always heard that shows like this are better on television. Don't believe it for a minute.
Dale, I was seated in about the middle of the orchestra. My eyes would have flashed by quickly!
There was a glint, I'm sure it was you.
