August Heat Fires Up December Opening
August Heat Fires Up December OpeningPrecisely two weeks to the day after it was originally scheduled to open, the Broadway transfer of Tracy Letts' August: Osage County is finally complete.
The play, which received critical acclaim during its initial run at Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre this past summer opens this evening at the Imperial Theatre.
While most of the castmembers are relatively unknown to Rialto audiences today -- Ian Barford, Deanna Dunagan, Kimberly Guerrero, Francis Guinan, Dennis Letts (father to the playwright), Madeleine Martin, Mariann Mayberry, Amy Morton, Rondi Reed and Troy West (the show also stars more well-known names like Brian Kerwin, Sally Murphy and Jeff Perry) -- something tells me that several of their names will be heard come Tony night.
Deanna Dunagan in particular offers perhaps the single most important Broadway debut in recent memory. Her performance will surely be recalled as one of the best on the boards in years.
Helmed by Anna D. Shapiro, August: Osage County is unequivocally the absolute best piece of theatre I've seen all year (click here for my SOB Review of the Chicago production).
Will the critics agree? Find out tomorrow when I post my critics' capsule.
This is Steve On Broadway (SOB).
