Radio Golf Tees Up Tonight
Radio Golf Tees Up Tonight
This evening, Radio Golf opens at Broadway's Cort Theatre. The play is the last in August Wilson's monumental ten-part cycle of the African-American experience.
At this risk of sounding a bit hyperbolic, tonight's opening is such a historic achievement that it's no small wonder that Wilson's image adorns the opening night Playbill (see photo).
Radio Golf has experienced an amazing journey across the country prior to its Rialto run. Thankfully, Kenny Leon remains at the helm along with most of the production team. Also, three of the five cast members I saw earlier this year in Chicago remain in this production: Anthony Chisholm, John Earl Jelks and James A. Williams; the talents of Harry Lennix and Tonya Pinkins have been added as Pittsburgh's black political power couple.
Will critics applaud this final chapter from the Wilson canon? Personally, given the outstanding version I saw in Chicago coupled with its honor yesterday from the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best American Play, I'm betting that they will.
This is Steve On Broadway (SOB).
