Chaperone: No More Foster Care
Chaperone: No More Foster Care
After nearly a year on Broadway in her Tony nominated turn as twenties starlet Janet Van DeGraaff in The Drowsy Chaperone (and longer than that if you count the Los Angeles tryout), actress Sutton Foster is set to depart the production on April 15.
Co-star Georgia Engel (pictured above right, dancing the "Toledo Surprise" with Foster) will exit the show on April 1. Seems like a perfect day for the lovably ditzy Engel.
Foster will be replaced for three months by Janine LaManna; on July 31, Mara Davi will assume the role. Engel will ultimately be replaced on April 17 by JoAnne Worley, who recently made a splash in the celebrated New York City Center Encores! presentation of Follies. In the interim, Stacia Fernandez and Linda Romoff will alternate as Mrs. Tottendale.
As I've reported before, the betting is high that Foster will take on the coveted role of Inga in the upcoming stage version of Young Frankenstein. Regrettably, I missed seeing Foster perform in The Drowsy Chaperone (she had the audacity to get married when I made my visit to the show!), but I'm hoping the fourth time will finally be the charm in seeing this thrice Tony-nominated actress perform.
This is Steve On Broadway (SOB).

What is Georgia Engel going to do next?
I have not yet been able to find out, but will keep you posted if I learn anything new.
According to today's Playbill, Georgia Engel has been cast in the forthcoming production of Oklahoma! at the St. Louis Muny (a wonderful outdoor venue). She'll be portraying Aunt Eller. The production runs June 18-24.
