Two Openings, One Night, Nunn Shines

Two Openings, One Night, Nunn Shines

As I reported earlier today, the revival of Les Misérables -- helmed by Trevor Nunn and John Caird -- opens on the Great White Way tonight. But that is only one of two shows opening this evening in which Nunn has a hand. The other occurs nearly 3,500 miles away in London as the curtain rises on his production of The Gershwins' Porgy And Bess.

Clarke Peters plays Porgy to Nicola Hughes' Bess under Gareth Valentine's direction. Arguably, this musical includes some of the most beautiful music ever written for the stage.

As I've previously reported, the Gershwin estate approved the reworking of the theatrical masterpiece that uses the 1925 source novel for a newly revised book. The $5 million production will feature a company of 40 cast members along with a 20-piece orchestra.

Will the abbreviated 2½ hour production captivate the critics? Find out tomorrow as I report on the reviews.
