The Tonys: If I Could Vote....for Best Revival of a Play

The Tonys: If I Could Vote....for Best Revival of a Play

The trouble with the "Best Revival of a Play" Tony category is that even if one wanted to go back and see each of the nominated works, you couldn't. True, Awake and Sing! and Faith Healer remain on Broadway, but the revivals of Edward Albee's Seascape and The Constant Wife are long since gone. The former, helmed by Mark Lamos, closed on January 8 after just 55 regular performances, while the Roundabout Theatre Company's revival of W. Somerset Maugham's classic play closed all the way back last August 21 after only 77 regular performances.

With memories of Tony voters very short, that really seems to leave the choice between Awake and Sing! and Faith Healer. Although Brian Friel's Faith Healer had an amazingly short life during its first Broadway incarnation (just 20 performances) in 1979, the stars seem aligned this year for the play to finally receive its due, particularly with the excellent, critically-acclaimed casting of nominees Ralph Fiennes and Ian McDiarmid in two of the three roles.

This is Steve On Broadway (SOB).
