Wicked In 2010?

Wicked In 2010?

Having already written about Universal Pictures' plans to bring the stage musical megahit Wicked to the big screen, I was delighted to find my first clue as to the potential release date.

It didn't come from Variety or Playbill, but from the Internet Movie Database (IMDB), my online Bible for anything having to do with movies or television. Not a day goes by where I'm not looking some tidbit up on this site, usually to settle a bet, but also to confirm hunches as well.

According to IMBD, a film version of "Wicked" currently is slated for a July 16, 2010 release. Naturally, the site cautions:

Because this project is categorized as being in production, the data is subject to change; some data could be removed completely.
While there's no news whatsoever of casting, it still warms my heart to see this information posted there, especially given these dreary October days of falling fortunes and an interminable Presidential campaign set to slog on for yet another 25 days.

This is Steve On Broadway (SOB).

Fancy that! I'm going to see it again this weekend! The casting will be interesting to read once it's announced.

it would be great for kristin chenowith to perform the opening and then transform into the younger version of glinda, played by someone like amy adams. as for elphaba, i could see jennifer hudson returning to the musical genre, or maybe a risk like an unknown.

i'm hoping they don't cast a high school musical girl, miley cyrus, anne hathaway, or some other pop disaster.

Actually Anne Hathaway would be great casting for Elphaba, although with her beautiful voice, I doubt that she's up to the melisma hijinks, I mean vocal fireworks. ;) I'll wait for it to go to cable either way.

ShoNuff, Interesting idea for Glinda. I agree that we don't want a pop disaster, but agree with SarahB that Anne Hathaway wouldn't necessarily be bad - she has a great singing voice.

I'm sorry but if Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenowith are not in the film production, it makes no sense. They were the original broadway team! I mean, look at the film production of Rent! They brought back 6 out of the 8 original cast members. With something like Wicked, you can't have anybody else but Idina and Kristin together again. They were made for those roles and I'm sorry but I wouldn't see it any other way.

Jordan, As much as I would love to see the OBC recreate their roles for the big screen, I'm betting that the producers will want stars who they think can bring in big box office.

For the love of God--no. Why?!?!?!
Wicked's a cute musical with marvelous technical elements. I've had wet dreams over being a techie in that show, but WHY must they make it into a movie?
Isn't bastardizing the book into something cutesy for a musical enough for these people? Must they continue to be dirty capitalists and turn it into a movie as well?
I pray that they use the book's plot instead of the musical's. That would at least save SOME of the storyline's integrity, because the musical and the book have like three things in common: Elphaba, being set in OZ and Galinda. That's about it.

Well the more I try, the least I can find anyone for the roles... but I've read about Anne Hathaway as Elphaba and Emmy Rossum as Nessarose and I really think they could work out fine, and click as THE sisters.
I would've loved to see The Cheno and Menzel (just like it happened for the Rent movie) but (just like Kristin herself said)... they might be too old, since the parts are for youngER girls :(
About Glinda... gee...replacing Kristin Chenoweth and have it on a movie would be so hard... but I hope it's do-able convincingly. I think of Evan Rachel Wood, Brittany Murphy (the girl CAN sing!) or Mamma mia's Amanda Seyfreid. I can't think of more names I dunno why... but as I said before, every single time I try to cast great actors for a Wicked movie (making it work and sale-able for a big audience), I just block. Still, I'm trying.
About Fiyero... I guess that would really depend on the girl lead actresses, but maybe Hairspray's James Marsden could do. About Boq... that's a little hard. I'd go for Across the Universe's Jim Sturgess.
The Wizard and Madame Morrible I really don't know. Any help here?
I'd also like to now what you think, so feel free to email me at js_kewl@hotmail.com

Wicked 'the movie' will NOT be released in 2010. This has been an ongoing RUMOR for many years. No cast has been set, and the stage production is thankfully still going very strong.... maybe in 2016 but not 2010. Go see the play in person as live is 1000 times better than any film that eventually comes out!
