Whoopi! Tony Eligibility And More Handicapping
Whoopi! Tony Eligibility And More HandicappingThe 2008 Tony Award nominees will be announced Tuesday morning at Sardi's, and the field of eligible nominees specifically excludes Glory Days. On the other hand, Gypsy director (an book writer) Arthur Laurents is eligible for Best Director of a Musical, even though this is his third time helming a revival of the same tuner.
Actress/comedienne/former Academy Award host Whoopi Goldberg will host the June 15 festivities -- not bad for someone who replaced avowed Rialtophile Rosie O'Donnell on television's "The View." Although Goldberg avoids using the "H" word and insists she'll merely be walking television viewers through the proceedings.
This morning, New York Post's Michael Riedel appears to get around the Tony nominators gag order by offering up the shows and actors he's secretly being told will earn nods. No real surprises in his prognostications:
Best Musical:
A Catered Affair
In The Heights
Passing Strange
Xanadu
Best Play:
August: Osage County
Rock 'N' Roll
The 39 Steps
The Seafarer
Best Revival of a Play:
Boeing-Boeing
Macbeth
The Homecoming
Top Girls
In the category of Best Revival of a Musical, Riedel limits his discussion to the shoo-in possibilities presented by South Pacific, going so far as to say that Paulo Szot will win Best Actor in a Musical.
And while there's officially no eligible show in the Best Theatrical Event category, Riedel suggests they may want to rethink that by giving Tricia Walsh-Smith the award for her wide-eyed You Tube divorce histrionics.
This is Steve On Broadway (SOB).

Gee Steve,
I thought the best event would be the quick closing of "Glory Days".......it's sort of like getting home with the new baby only to realize it's not as cute as you thought.......

Per my careful instructions above, I have removed a remark that not only impugns the integrity of an individual, but it also has no correlation to the original story.
I still hope that Daniel Evans will take home the best musical actor Tony. Paulo Szot is an opera actor who is temporarily slumming in musical theatre. Even if he wins the Tony, he isn't going to leave the world of opera for musical theatre. Daniel Evans, on the other hand, is an actor who has a brilliant career ahead of him in musical and legit theatre on Broadway.
BB, I have to disagree. In my humble opinion, this is not about who is true to the world of live theatre, but instead about the most indelible impression left by an acting performance of the year.
As affecting as I found Evans' George, I was brought to tears by Szot's amazing portrayal of Emile. If I were voting, I'd go with Szot.
And what's to say this newfound success on the Broadway stage won't serve as a turning point for him toward live theatre? And I believe that Evans will be headed back to the U.K. to finish a doctorate.
I have to say I preferred Daniel Evans' performance to Szot although Szot is the better singer. As for Daniel Evans, yes he is in graduate school, but he wouldn't turn down another Broadway show. He did do a workshop a couple of years ago of a revival of "On A Clear Day", directed by Michael Mayer where the character of Daisy Prince was turned into David Prince. If he won the Tony, this revial could get of the ground.
Okay, I bit the bullet and just bought full priced tickets to South Pacific (eeeks. I never pay full price.. haha) so considering how much I loved Daniel Evan's performance, I cannot wait to see SP (even though I've never been that impressed with prior productions but I guess that's the point that this one is so good)!
also, noted im on the blogroll! thx!
