When The Show IS Smokin'

When The Show IS Smokin'

Earlier this year, that most perennial of Blue States, the State of Minnesota, passed a "Freedom to Breathe" measure into law that includes a complete non-smoking ban in restaurants, bars and nightclubs.

Well, almost complete.

The exception? The law does "not prohibit smoking by actors and actresses as part of a theatrical performance in compliance with section 366.01. Notice of smoking in a performance shall be given to theater patrons in advance and shall be included in performance programs."

According to the Associated Press, as many as 30 Minnesota bars and nightclubs are already actively skirting the intent of the law by putting on pretend productions, going to the expense of printing programs and encouraging patrons to come in costume for their improvised "performances." One such improvisational "show" is called Before The Ban.

For its part, the state is trying to figure a way out of the haze to stamp out this activity, lest the law become the butt of jokes. Seems like they're already a little too late.

This is Steve On Broadway (SOB).

Steve,
Are you seeing red over attempts to get around the ban, or does it just leave you feeling kind of blue?

You are very clever, Esther. I guess more than anything else, I find it rather amusing.

Personally, I do not smoke, nor do I like being in a place where people are smoking, period. It's one of the reasons I don't enjoy going to places like Las Vegas where you have to wade through throngs of smokers.
