O-Kaye Given to Temporary LuPone Replacement

O-Kaye Given to Temporary LuPone Replacement

Tony Award-winning Patti LuPone, who has just received her fourth Tony nomination for her critically-acclaimed work in the spellbinding Broadway revival of Sweeney Todd, will be taking a short leave from the production for eight performances, according to Playbill. Tony winner Judy Kaye will reportedly take over the role of Mrs. Lovett, June 20-25.

However, the report erroneously states that she's assuming the role while LuPone takes a brief leave to portray Mama Rose in Gypsy at Illinois' Ravinia Festival 2006. The actual dates for Gypsy are August 11-13. It remains to be seen whether LuPone is merely leaving in June to rehearse with Jessica Boevers (Gypsy) and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, but it should be noted that other reports indicate Kaye will also fill in for LuPone in August.

LuPone has become a perennial favorite at Ravinia, an outdoor amphitheatre just north of Chicago, by performing in a Stephen Sondheim musical "concert" each season. I took in last summer's performance of Sondheim's lesser-known Anyone Can Whistle featuring LuPone alongside current Sweeney Todd co-star Michael Cerveris and an exquisite Audra McDonald. You can be sure that I won't let anything get in my way of seeing LuPone's take on Gypsy Rose Lee's infamous stage mother this August. Thankfully, my long-awaited tickets just arrived in the mail today!

This is Steve On Broadway (SOB).
