Shade Goes Dark
Shade Goes DarkI'm very sad to report that Stanley McDonald, father of four-time Tony winner Audra McDonald, was tragically killed in a gyroplane accident near Olivehurst, CA over the weekend. The elder McDonald had been a school administrator with the Fresno Unified School District. He was 62.
Due to the ensuing absence of Audra McDonald from the new Broadway revival of 110 In The Shade, performances for Wednesday and Thursday at Studio 54 have been canceled. At this time, performances are scheduled to resume on Friday, May 4; opening night remains set for May 9.
The Fresno Bee provides a nicely written tribute to Stanley McDonald and includes a description of his long-term pride in his family. As someone who's touched not only by the story -- but also for the breathtaking, rich portrayals the younger McDonald so beautifully brings to the stage, no doubt because of inspiration from her father -- I want to express my sincere condolences to this amazing actress and her family on their tremendous loss.

Very tragic. Surprised they went dark. I suppose if they tried to put in an unuderstudy they would have had a riot.
Does she even have an understudy?
Corey, I agree. It's very sad.
Colleen Fitzpatrick is listed as the understudy for Audra McDonald, but one wonders if McDonald's great track record left Fitzgerald unprepared to move forward in the great actress' place.
