Is Johansson's South Pacific Journey Just Happy Talk?

Is Johansson's South Pacific Journey Just Happy Talk?

For the second time in as many years, silver screen starlet Scarlett Johansson is rumored to be in the running for a leading role in a revival of a Rodgers and Hammerstein classic.

First came the whispers that the actress was in talks with Andrew Lloyd Webber to star in his celebrated revival of The Sound Of Music. But ultimately, the role of the nun-turned-governess was determined by the BBC's reality series "How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?"

Now comes word via New York Post's Michael Riedel that the actress named by Esquire magazine as the sexiest woman alive is at or near the top of the list for the role of Nellie Forbush in the "sexy" revival of South Pacific to be staged at Lincoln Center in 2008. Hedging his bets, Riedel also adds the names of the Oscar-winning Reese Witherspoon and current reigning Broadway beauty Kelli O'Hara to the short list supposedly under consideration.

Still no word on whether Miss Johansson actually has the appropriate voice for the role.

This is Steve On Broadway (SOB).
