The Light In The Piazza Dims Today on Broadway
With 504 regular performances to its credit, the critically-acclaimed Adam Guettel/Craig Lucas tuner The Light In The Piazza ends its run today at Broadway's Vivian Beaumont Theatre. The musical ends on a relatively high note, having still attracted a capacity of 65.1% in its second to last week.
The musical won 6 Tonys out of the 11 for which it was nominated, including Best Original Score (Adam Guettel), Best Actress in a Musical (the enchanting Victoria Clark, channeling her inner Elizabeth Dole for her North Carolina accent), Best Orchestrations (Bruce Coughlin, Adam Guettel and Ted Sperling), Best Scenic Design (Michael Yeargan), Best Costume Design (Catherine Zuber) and Best Lighting Design (Christopher Akerlind).
Tony-nominated Matthew Morrison had already left The Light In The Piazza by the time I saw it last September, yet it was still a moving theatrical experience with the outstanding Aaron Lazar filling Morrison's shoes as the emotionally-charged, love-struck Fabrizio.
While the lights dim on the Broadway production today, audiences throughout the United States will be able to revel in the romantic musical beginning this September at Cincinnati's Procter and Gamble Hall. The touring production is currently scheduled for the following cities:
